The legacy of the Delta S4 was sadly tainted following the crash that killed Henri Toivonen and his co-driver, Sergio Cresto, on the 1986 Tour de Corse. Despite that tragic accident, there is still something incredibly special about the Delta Integrale in both its Group B and Group A form, potentially making it the greatest rally car of all time.
Henri Toivonen – Tour de Corse 1986. During the second day, on Friday, 2nd of May, at the seventh kilometre of the 18th stage, Corte–Taverna, Henri Toivonen and co-driver Sergio Cresto crashed their Lancia Delta S4 in a somewhat mundane left-hand corner.

The models used – Fulvia HF, Stratos, Rally 037, and the Delta family: S4, HF, and Integrale – are among the most successful rally cars of all time. Following Audi's lead, Lancia had introduced a new four-wheel-drive World Rally Championship contender in 1985, the Delta S4, which bore more than a passing resemblance to its road-going namesake.
The Lancia Delta S4 is a Group B rally car that competed in the World Rally Championship in 1985 and 1986, until Group B cars were banned from competition by the FIA. The car replaced the Lancia 037 Monte Carlo. The S4 took full advantage of the loose Group B regulations and was highly advanced.
It also arguably is the most potent Group B machine there ever was. It’s the actual Lancia Delta S4 that won the 1985 RAC Rally driven by the late and legendary Henri Toivonen, and it’s estimated to sell for £725,000 to £800,000. Lancia in 1984 found that its ‘83 championship-winning two-wheel-drive 037 was getting long in the tooth.
The Lancia Delta S4 was possibly the greatest interpretation of the insane Group B Rally rules of the 1980s. With its twin-charged engine and four-wheel drive system, the Delta S4 would go on to claim a number of wins before the Group B series was disbanded.
